Why Clothing Color Matters!

This deep red compliments Felicia’s wine enhanced body care line.

As you’re selecting clothing colors for your photo shoot, especially if you’re including or focusing on business headshots, you must consider color theory. Review the list below to see what certain colors convey in images. Want to be sure that your audience sees you as trustworthy? Pick a blue share - darker for more authoritative or lighter for softer, friendlier vibes.

Before reviewing the meanings and words associated with each color, make a list of words that you would like people to associate you with. And, if you find that difficult, think about what color you have on when people tend to stop and compliment you on what you’re wearing. Most people have that one or two shirts in a color that they often get compliments on. You can also think of colors that bring out your eye color and the complimentary color too to accentuate the tones in your photos.

Red - passion, determination

Orange - enthusiasm, youth

Yellow - joy, spontaneity

Green - stability, peace

Blue - trustworthiness, loyalty

Purple - luxury, ambition

Katy chose a light, but bright blue color as she is interested in showcasing her approachable, but knowledgable position.

Once you have the color group that you’d like to include, we’ll need to decide on the tones of those colors. Are you the boss (or are we taking these headshots so that you can move up to being a boss!)? Include some bright colors in your wardrobe collection. If you need your audience to warm up to you quickly and aren’t necessarily on the CEO level, stick with pastel colors that will bring people in. Jewel tones, those that are emerald, purple, royal blue for example, will stand out if you’re competing with tons of other headshots or images.

Bright Colors - leadership, confidence, exuberance

Pastels - friendliness, approachability, warmth

Jewel Tones - dynamic, eye-catching, royal

Tee looks stunning in her warm tones that are in nude tones with a pop of yellow. This fashionable look shows as modern and current, while inviting.

We are talking color, but you may also want to bring outfits that are in one of these categories as well. When sticking with all one color, whether bright and bold or nude tones, consider finding multiple textures in that same tone so that your photos stand out against the competition.

Blacks - classic, luxurious, timeless

Whites - modern, luxurious, fresh

Neutrals - cool, calm, collected

Nudes - warm, approachable, current

Regardless of what you decide to bring to your photo shoot, it will go well! Bring as many options as you’d like and we’ll work together to style you for the perfect images!
